6. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Speaker of the day was Mrs. Alka Joshi who is the founder of “Abhivyakti” and a big name in the social activist circle. She has taught a lot of rural women how to stand up for their rights and she spreads awareness with respect to the gender equality and awareness. The seminar opened by Mrs. Joshi asking several questions to understand what is the crowd mentality with respect to some debatable questions which are prominently misunderstood. With respect to the answers she received she choose to move on with some questions while finally selecting “Where do we see Gender discrimination in the society” as the point to begin the seminar. The gender discrimination issue is observed in the society on all the fronts, it can be educational opportunities, jobs, and employment and business opportunities. The main reason is that there are several social restrictions that are faced by women on fronts of health, wealth, political power, sexual violence, female feticide.
The second question that was supposed to be addressed was “What do you mean by a girl/boy?” While the crowd was focusing more on the physical descriptions and personality traits, the main question was how these traits were formed. The gender roles that were created by the society is what defined these traits, for example women are found more the in the serving roles in the industries or in the cosmetics industries. The society tells how men should be men and how women should be women. Gender inequality is what leads to violence against women. The statistical data is every 3 minute there is an eve teasing incident, every 5 minute there is a domestic violence case, every 15 minutes there is a sexual violence incident, every 72 minute there is one dowry murder case. The main question to be pondered upon “is this gender equality?” Human should be living together as humans while exhibiting the characteristics Caring, adventurous and Responsible.
